Simple Maintenance Tips for Every Car Owner

If you’ve ever wondered when you should take your car in for service or repair, you’ll be happy to know that there are some easy ways to check if it’s time to schedule a service appointment. Here are some very simple maintenance tips that almost anyone can do by themselves.

1. Check your oil
The most basic and necessary maintenance on a car is a simple oil change. Depending on the type of oil your car uses, the oil change interval may vary. The easiest way to find out if it’s time for an oil change is by checking the dipstick in the engine bay. If the dipstick is showing that your oil is low or if the oil is visually thick and dark, it’s about time for that oil change. Oil changes can be done at home, or you can pay the dealership to take care of your car for you.

2. Inspect your tires
One of the most important safety features of any car are its tires. Worn tires that are overdue for replacement are unsafe to continue using. Take a look at your tires and if they’re bald or the wear bars are showing, it is time to replace them. If you’re good about rotating your tires and getting the vehicle aligned, you can extend the life of your tires, but otherwise you might find yourself needing to replace two tires more often. Take your car to the tire center and get those worn out tires replaced.

3. Check your air filter(s)
Have you noticed a funny smell blowing into your face when you turn on the air conditioning in your car? The smell could be coming from a dirty air filter in the engine bay or from the cabin air filter located behind the glove box. Summer is fast approaching and pretty soon you’ll be using your air conditioning more often. Don’t let smelly air circulate inside your car. Inspect your air filters and replace them if necessary. Air filters are relatively cheap and easy to replace yourself, or you bring your car into the dealership for service.

Basic car maintenance can extend the life of your car and add value to your investment.
