The city of Visalia, California may not be the largest in the San Joaquin Valley, but there certainly are plenty of things to do and places to see. Just a short drive across town could open up endless opportunities to sight-see. Even as a resident of Tulare County, you might never have actually visited popular tourist locations, but don’t let anything stop you. Here are three beautiful state and national parks to check out.

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park
Brush up on your history at the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, a preservation of the town of Allensworth. This small California town is the only one founded, financed, and governed by African Americans in 1908. Restoration of key buildings have made this a must-see landmark established as a state historical site. Here, you’ll get a feel for how life in Allensworth, CA may have been decades ago. This is definitely one destination to keep an eye on.

Mooney Grove Park
Visit one of the oldest parks in the entire Tulare County at Mooney Grove Park in Visalia, CA. This park is also one of the largest parks in the area. While incorporating the normal athletic fields and picnic shelters, this multipurpose park is home to the Tulare County Museum. Get a breath of fresh air, while checking out the historical exhibits. Popular on the weekend, Mooney Grove Park does become crowded with tourists trying to get a glimpse of the “End of the Trail Statue,” arguably one of the most popular statues in the United States.

Sequoia National Park
Just east of Visalia, in the southern Sierra Nevada, sits Sequoia National Park. Established in 1890, Sequoia National Park is home to some of the oldest and largest trees you’ll see in your lifetime. Drive through the national park or camp out through the night, and you’ll get a majestic view of some of the most breathtaking landscapes you’ll ever experience. At Sequoia National Park, you’ll find the largest tree in the world, the General Sherman Tree, which stands over 200 feet tall. Just standing at the base of the tree and looking straight up might break your neck, but the amazing sight is one you’ll never forget.
